Trying your hand at drawing a cat

Learning to draw is something many people hesitate about taking up. It is often felt that the task is difficult and that it will need a knack to get done right. However learning to draw is rather simple especially if you start with the basics. Before you set out to start drawing, make sure that you have all that you need close around you. A good quality pencil, an eraser, a dark felt tip pen for the outlines, and some paper. With this you are set to begin.

The best thing to do would be to start with something simple. A cat is one of the best animals to begin with. All you need to do is start with a simple circle. This will naturally be the face. You can choose from a range of eye shapes for your cat. Round eyes or almond shaped eyes can be the way to go. Just make sure that you place them in the center of the circle.

Next you need to go for the nose. This has to be a V shaped pattern. Right below it is where your mouth is going to come. Draw a curved line under the nose and then a single smaller line on either side of the line. Draw small leaf like shapes on either side of the head to represent the ears.

This will be followed by detailing such as that of whiskers, stripes or even patches. Fill in the ears with some color to make it look all the more real. You could even choose to make the mouth slightly off-center to give it a more real look.

The one things about a cat is that you never really see its neck, so make sure to place the head squarely on the body of the cat. You can draw three straight lines below the body of the cat to represent the legs. Add in the detailing for the paws so that it is visible to all. You can draw any kind of markings on the cat to make it look unique. Choose from spots, stripes or patches and even colour shades.

If you don’t really want to do the whole body you can add in a few lines and make it look like your cat is sleeping. Placement of lines in the right places can make all the difference. This is a simple way in which you can draw a cat. Once you are confident, you can move on to other animals.
